President Donald Trump has been confirmed as the keynote speaker at the Values Voters Summit, an anti-LGBT conference taking place this weekend in Washington, D.C. Historically, it makes Trump the first-ever sitting president to speak at a hate group’s event.
The event is hosted by The Family Research Council, a conservative Christian group who opposes and actively lobbies against equal rights for LGBT persons. The hate group campaigns against same-sex marriage, same-sex civil unions, LGBT adoption, abortion, embryonic stell-cell research, pornography and divorce.
According to their site, the Summit is intended to “provide a forum to help inform and mobilize citizens across America to preserve the bedrock values that make our nation strong.”
It only gets more alarming from there. On a tab on their site devoted to the issue of homosexuality, the Family Reseach Council says they believe:
“Homosexual conduct is harmful to the persons who engage in it and to society at large, and can never be affirmed. It is by definition unnatural, and as such is associated with negative physical and psychological health effects. While the origins of same-sex attractions may be complex, there is no convincing evidence that a homosexual identity is ever something genetic or inborn. We oppose the vigorous efforts of homosexual activists to demand that homosexuality be accepted as equivalent to heterosexuality in law, in the media, and in schools.”
Thought the hate stopped there? Wrong, keep reading:
“Attempts to join two men or two women in ‘marriage’ constitute a radical redefinition and falsification of the institution, and FRC supports state and federal constitutional amendments to prevent such redefinition by courts or legislatures. Sympathy must be extended to those who struggle with unwanted same-sex attractions, and every effort should be made to assist such persons to overcome those attractions, as many already have.”
Back in 2016, Trump tweeted in support for LGBT rights and claimed that Hillary Clinton didn’t have their best interest at heart.
It appears as though the roles have been reversed; Trump is definitely the one inflicting pain and threatening the LGBT communities. It will be interesting to see what he says at this weekend’s conference. Stay tuned.
