After President Trump’s immigration ban went into full effect, Asghar Farhadi, an award winning Iranian director who appeared to be banned from attending the Oscars under Trump’s under, announced that he would not attend the Oscars regardless of whether or not he would be permitted to do so out of respect for his country. Instead, the film nominee The Salesman, was represented by Anousheh Ansari and Firouz Naderi, two Iranian Americans, both of whom are known for their dedication to the subject of space exploration.
As the evening progressed, the winner of the foreign film category was announced: The Iranian director won the nominee and Anousheh Ansari gave an impeccable speech written by the director himself. In the statement, Farhadi explains his absentee from the Oscars as well as the “inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants into the United States.”

Trump just got sucker punched by an award winning director who wasn’t even present at the Oscars due to Trump’s ridiculous executive order. Props to this director for taking a stand!
