Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has never liked outgoing President Obama. The recent passing of a United Nations resolution condemning Israel for its settlements in occupied Palestine and its decades long Orwellian treatment of the Palestinian people that has them without the most basic of human rights has left Netanyahu fuming. But, it’s not because of the resolution condemning settlements. In fact, previous U.S. administrations have allowed similar resolutions to pass before. The resolution paves the way for Israeli officials to be charged with war crimes in international courts. In the resolution, the UN Security Council:
“‘Reaffirms that the establishment by Israel of settlements in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, has no legal validity and constitutes a flagrant violation under international law and a major obstacle to the achievement of the two-State solution and a just, lasting and comprehensive peace.’ The council also ‘reiterates its demand that Israel immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.’”
The resolution imposes no specific punishment on Israel should it continue with settlements in Palestine. But it can be used to go after Israeli leaders in both the military and political establishments who are complicit in violating international law:
“Resolution 2334 implicitly encourages the International Criminal Court (ICC) to advance towards prosecution on the ICC’s current preliminary examination of whether Israeli officials have engaged in the ‘war crime’ of settlement building.”
There may come a point very soon when Israeli officials won’t be able to travel beyond the borders of the country because if they do, they’ll be dragged off to jail. Netanyahu would be the first to go.
